Scripture References: Proverbs 30:20; John 8:3-11
Getting into the Word and taking a closer look at The Adultress Woman. Proverbs 30:20 "Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth and saith, I have done no wickedness."
According to the Mosaic Law (Deuteronomy 17:5, 6) a man or woman at the mouth of two or three witness shall be put to death for committing a wicked thing. In the passage of John 8:3 - 11 we see the woman being brought forth but not the man, yet they were caught in the act. When the Pharisees brought the woman to Jesus they brought her tempting Jesus. Jesus instead of immediately responding to them he bent down and began writing on the ground. The bible does not tell us what he wrote just that he wrote. When they continued asking Jesus he says "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her" John 8:7 "One by one they began to leave. "When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." John 8:10 - 11 In Revelation 12:20 it says "the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night.
We learn through this passage that Jesus forbade judgement against her. The woman was granted reprieve in-spite of the severe demands of the Mosaic Law. This demonstrates grace and mercy from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This passage encourages us to examine our own conscience to deal with our own humanity and not with legal theory. It gives us the ability to make choices that will reverse the course of our former life that we may receive forgiveness. Although guilty people brought a guilty person to the one person who came into this world not to condemn the sinner but to save them, her sins were not dismissed but she was granted reprieve which gave her freedom to go. The choice she had is the same choice we have today to make better choices. The choices we make will determine the shape of our future.
As forgiven people God grants us the ability and power to go and sin no more. When we come into contact with a sinner we are not to be judgemental or to condemn the sinner but we are to point the sinner to Jesus who forgives and is merciful.
The choices is yours; will you make a better choice today for a brighter future tomorrow?
